On 21st May 2024, the St.Gallen Institute of Management in Asia (SGI) hosted together with the local St.Gallen alumni community the 18th St.Gallen Public Lecture in Singapore at Singapore Management University. It was conducted by Prof. Dr. Martin Eppler, Professor of Media and Communication Management at the University of St.Gallen, who spoke on the topic, “Debias by Design: Knowing your Biases and Improving Your Decision Making.”
He shed light on how some innate, invisible biases could subconsciously affect one’s decision making in both private and professional spaces. After examining a few types of common biases, Prof. Dr. Eppler encouraged the audience to reflect on how bias blind spots have potentially influenced their perceptions and decisions over time, and to take proactive action to circumvent these trends. Participants were also equipped with tools on how to examine their own decision-making style, and the importance of consciously evaluating one’s emotions and biases towards more impactful and holistic outcomes.
We thank Prof. Dr. Eppler for his insights and advice and also all guests, consisting of alumni as well as friends and supporters of the SGI and the University of St.Gallen, for their time and active participation during the public lecture.
