Business Study Mission to China This course will combine classic in‑class teaching with a study mission to China (Shanghai and Hangzhou). In addition to formal lectures, the course relies on case studies, recent research studies, media coverage and insights from domain experts. The course materials, taken together, will provide students with a good grounding in the country prior to arrival, and enable them to benefit from and fully participate in the business meetings and company visits that will take place during the week in China. Our group will visit Shanghai, China's financial centre, and Hangzhou, an emerging technology hub. By taking this course, students will gain a systematic and structured understanding of Chinese society, its social organisation, and its economic development. They will also be exposed to the contrasting socio-political, cultural and economic contexts of a modern Asian socialist state with a thriving market economy. This course provides a broad sweep of the historical context of social change and seeks to equip students with a good appreciation and understanding of the history, culture, society, economy and business environment in China. In view of China’s current and future global economic impact, an understanding of Chinese culture and business environment is not optional, it is a necessity.
