WMI & SMU Study Mission to Switzerland organized by University of St.Gallen From 15 to 17 March 2017, Prof. Dr. Stefan Morkoetter led this year’s Business Study Mission to Switzerland of the Wealth Management Institute and the Singapore Management University. The study mission - co-organized by the St.Gallen Institute of Management in Asia and the Swiss Institute of Banking and Finance at the University of St.Gallen - served to introduce more than 50 participants to various distinctive elements of the US$4 trillion Swiss wealth management market. It had a special focus on family businesses, and especially family offices, which provide a framework for managing family wealth over generations. Through interaction with practitioners, a case study exercise as well as a visit to Credit Suisse, participants were given a holistic perspective of different aspects of the wealth management industry. Topics discussed included family governance structures, succession planning, digitalization and automation in the banking industry, and future perspectives of private banking. By learning about the structures and dynamics of family businesses, participants had the opportunity to understand the needs of wealthy families with regard to managing not only their wealth but also their family businesses.
