Corporate and Business Development in Southeast Asia 2018 For the fourth time, the St.Gallen Institute of Management in Asia offered the course “Corporate and Business Development in Southeast Asia” for students from the Master of Business Management (MUG) in November 2018. Taught by Dr. Christine Scheef, the course provided the students ample opportunities to learn about Southeast Asia’s business context and get first-hands insights into local and international companies in Singapore. Southeast Asia is experiencing an enormous economic growth with a rising middle class and growth in entrepreneurial start-ups and innovation activities. With large, emerging markets around it, Singapore has developed into a hub for regional headquarters that strive to do business in Asia. The region is, however, often difficult to comprehend for many Western companies, partly due to its huge diversity in cultures, ethnicities and stages of economic development. The course combines traditional lectures and case studies with guest speakers and company visits to develop students’ practical skills and knowledge about the region. It aims to develop students’ understanding of the diverse business contexts and growth trends in Southeast Asia and get to know multinational firms from the region and their corporate strategies. The course was enriched by guest lectures from senior executives and company visit. For instance, the students visited local companies such as Singapore Airlines, Singapore Post and the Lazada Group – Southeast Asia’s largest e-commerce platform – as well as the regional headquarter of Infineon Technologies. After an intensive week of classes and discussions, the students went back to St.Gallen with many new impressions and knowledge about the region.
