Corporate and Business Development in Southeast Asia The course “Corporate and Business Development in Southeast Asia” of the Master of Business Management (MUG) was held for the third time in Singapore from 5 to 10 November 2017 under the supervision of Dr. Christine Scheef. The course combines traditional lectures and case studies with guest speakers and company visits to develop students’ practical knowledge and skills. It aims to develop students’ understanding of the diverse business contexts and growth trends in Southeast Asia as well as to analyse the regional and corporate strategy of Western and local multinational firms. As part of the course, the 24 master students analysed the business systems of various countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand and the corporate strategies of large local companies to derive similarities and differences to their Western counterparts. Discussions also focused on the location choice of regional headquarters and production sites in Asia. The course was enriched by guest lectures from senior executives and company visits. For instance, the students visited two local companies, DBS X – the bank’s innovation lab – and Singapore Airlines as well as the regional headquarters of two Western companies, BSH Home Appliances and Infineon Technologies. After an intensive week of classes and discussions, the students went back to St.Gallen with many new impressions and knowledge about the region.
