Asia Term Welcome Dinner The Asia Term students from the University of St.Gallen (HSG) as well as representatives from HSG and the Singapore Management University (SMU) celebrated the Asia Term Welcome Dinner of 2017. The Welcome Dinner was held at the Red Star restaurant, a traditional Cantonese restaurant established in 1974. For the students, who arrived a few weeks ago in Singapore, it was an opportunity to get to know each other better outside the university and to interact with representatives of the HSG, SGI and SMU. It was a great pleasure for the team of the St.Gallen Institute of Management in Asia (SGI) to welcome Prof. Dr. Ulrike Landfester, Vice-President of the University of St.Gallen, and Dr. Arno Hold, Dean of External Relations, to the Asia Term Welcome Dinner. Following speeches by Prof. Dr. Stefan Morkötter, Dr. Gralf Sieghold, Dr. Francis Koh and Prof. Dr. Ulrike Landfester, students enjoyed an eight-course dinner at the restaurant. After the dinner, students engaged in a dialogue with the Master chefs, Sin Leong (aged 90) and Hooi Kok Wai (aged 78), co-owners of the restaurant and Singapore's two remaining Heavenly Kings of Cantonese cuisine. They shared with the students their incredible journeys from kitchen boys to top chefs, and how they overcame many difficulties in the early years of their business. The students also had the opportunity to sample the chefs' signature creations, such as the Yam Basket and USA Duck. Not only were they introduced to the flavours of Cantonese cuisine, but they also benefited from the chefs' life lessons on perseverance, resourcefulness and entrepreneurship.
