16th St.Gallen Public Lecture by Prof. Dr. Björn Ambos Business Strategy in Uncertain and Volatile Times While volatile times are nothing new in the history of mankind, the strategic options on how to deal with them have become increasingly important. Prof. Dr. Bjoern Ambos, Visiting Professor at the St.Gallen Institute of Management in Asia and Chaired Professor and Managing Director at the Institute of Management & Strategy of the University of St.Gallen, shared the results of his research in a talk at Singapore Management University on 28 November 2019. Prof. Dr. Ambos started his lecture by pointing out to the audience, which consisted of HSG alumni currently working in Singapore and the interested public, that forecasting the future usually goes wrong. Showcasing examples for successful strategies when the future is uncertain, Prof. Dr. Ambos took the listeners on a journey from battlefields and sea fights to penguin hunting and the Silicon Valley. He also showed the disruptive power of inventions, that challenge and change the power structure in organisations, how they are resisted and the resistance can be overcome. Before closing the session, Prof. Dr. Ambos shared his thoughts on the role of leadership in high uncertainty: organisations and institutions need a scenario of the future to work with, so the most important task of the leadership is to define expectations of the future to allow the organisation to continue to work – as the Singaporean government shows successfully: “If nobody has a clue of what is going to come, you just tell them what is going to come – and validate the strategy as you go”. The St.Gallen public lecture series is jointly organized by the St.Gallen Institute of Management in Asia and the local HSG alumni community in Singapore. In the public lecture, St.Gallen faculty members share their research with a broad audience and highlight the practical application of their work.
